Hair or Eyelash Pulling Disorder
HOW to STOP pulling your hair out!
Trichotillomania, also referred to as 'Trich', is when someone can't resist the urge to pull out their own (or someone else's) hair on their head, eyebrows or eyelashes or other parts of the body.
Eyelash pulling can be a painful compulsion, and while it is not quite as widespread as hair pulling (also referred to as trichotillomania), it happens a lot.
In this video, Mark Tyrrell talks about a client who came to him for help after her compulsion also spread to her three-year old daughter.
See the steps he took his client through to stop her obsessively pulling out her eyelashes.
People with 'Trich' will usually feel an intense urge to pull their hair out & will experience growing tension until they do. After pulling their hair out, they often feel a sense of relief. But this relief is usually short-lived!
A person may be tempted to pull their hair out due to stress, OCD, or because it satisfies an unexplainable urge! On occasion, it may even be done without really thinking about it!
If this sounds like you (or someone you know) then don't worry, there are way to help control this.
You should see a Doctor if you (or your child) has started puling out your hair especially if this then leads to eating or 'nibbling' on the hair that has been pulled out.
Eating hair can lead to serious illness due to hairballs forming in the stomach.
Your Doctor will probably wish to examine the areas where hair has been plucked out to ensure that there are no other underlining causes that could have contributed to the hair loss.
Trich is commonly treated using a type of CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) or 'habit reversal training'.
Typical treatments can include:
Identifying 'triggers' for your hair pulling and avoiding them
Substituting your actions with other (less harmful) actions
IMPORTANT
The use of medication (including antidepressants) are not considered to be an effective treatment.
